my favorite part of utena is that she in fact did not study the blade, she was just so good at basketball that it by proxy made her awesome at sword fighting, in fact better at sword fighting than the people sword fighting their entire lives. the most jock of all time

Minor addendum: it’s actually Utena’s BASEBALL skills that transferred over to sword fighting— she explains in this weird little audio drama that she used to play a lot of baseball as “special prince training” specifically with the expectation that it would help her use a sword eventually. It’s completely insane that she thought this and even more insane that it WORKED.

acts 1-2 of homestuck are like sillytimes comedy with fun in store BUT enough questions to keep readers intrigued in whats happening which is why theyre a bit slow and still a fun read. act 3 is when homestuck leans more into the mystery of the narrative but still keeps the silliness. act 4 is when it goes full force into the narrative being based around mysteries and solving them via timeloops and act 5 caps it off by resolving many mysteries and setting up new ones while setting up serious stakes for the protagonists to conquer.

act 6 is a characterization study and a different genre than the first five acts.

the only good comparison is i think acts 1-5 of homestuck are like the 9th & 10th doctors of doctor who. act 6 is like the 11th & 12th doctors.

“early acts” fans and “act 6” fans are both kind of dumb terminology wise because both of these categories are like “mystery” fans and “relationship drama” fans. of course youre going to like some acts better than the other if you dislike mysteries or dislike relationship drama. also people can like both and end up liking both parts of the comic!

If there’s one thing I’m learning from all the Vriska fanart that’s been crossing my dash because of the whole poll thing, it’s that the fandom’s image of her is still very much rooted in the 2012 fanart aesthetic. Like, I’m not judging or anything, but I feel I can state without fear of contradiction that a Vriska whose image was informed by the fanart aesthetics of 2023 would be considerably less dignified.

All I’m saying is that Vriska’s image in fandom circles benefits a great deal from the fact that she pre-dates the invention of the term “failgirl”.

Every Homestuck should watch this weekly, if not daily. It should be the Talmud to Homestuck’s Torah.
